Institue for the Environment

The Institute for the Environment (IE) educates future environmental leaders and engages with the people of North Carolina and the nation to address and solve environmental challenges. In collaboration with the UNC Study Abroad Office and the Environment, Ecology, and Energy Program within the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, IE offers five unique field sites where undergraduates live, study, and conduct research.
Four of these sites are in North Carolina and engage students in a semester of transformative hands-on learning and research. Challenges facing host communities help shape the curriculum at each site, and the results of research by UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and students are shared with community partners. The Outer Bands Field Site (OBXFS) is based in Dare County.

Collaboration

  • The OBXFS is hosted at the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI), a multi-institutional research and educational partnership of the UNC System led by East Carolina University (ECU). CSI includes North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, and Elizabeth City State University.
  • OBXFS students benefit from frequent interactions with the community, which is facilitated by a Community Advisory Board (CAB). CAB members are residents of the Outer Banks and Eastern N.C. who bring a diversity of insights, disciplines, professional practices, and experiences to enrich the student experience.
  • Students have research internships with local organizations and collaborate with and learn from professionals at numerous organizations, including the NC Aquarium, National Estuarine Research Reserve northern sites, NC Coastal Federation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, The Nature Conservancy, and North Carolina Renewable Ocean Energy Program, to name a few.

Community Impact

  • The OBXFS houses students at a facility leased by CSI, contributing to the occupancy of ECU’s housing.
  • Students intern with local, state, county, and federal government and nonprofit organizations. They visit coastal communities from Norfolk, VA, to Ocracoke, N.C., interacting with professionals from environmental organizations and experiencing diverse coastal ecosystems.
  • Monthly, students meet with and discuss their experience and research with a local CAB, comprised of individuals from the Outer Banks community who have experience with or interest in environmental issues.
  • Students attend public meetings and, at the end of the semester, give a public presentation of their final capstone research findings on a topic of local relevance and interest to the community.

Student Involvement

  • Each year, 11 students participate in OBFXS.
