The IRB Information System (IRBIS) is the system UNC uses to review and process applications.

Online Applications

All applications (i.e., Initial, Modification, Renewal, Closure/ New Safety Information) are online. Consent forms are built as you proceed through the application, and are presented to you upon completion. Please go to to complete and submit your application to the IRB.

As of January 8, 2024, the University requires a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access IRBIS and other specific research administration systems when you’re off campus. Detailed instructions for setting up your VPN are available on the University’s IT website. If you encounter any issues or require assistance, the IT Help Desk can help you troubleshoot the problem.
