Can I apply I am not a US Citizen or permanent resident?
Preference will be given to individuals who are lawfully eligible to work in the United States. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill strongly encourages applications from individuals that have experience, background and/or scholarship that will contribute to the diversity of the campus community.
I have finished my PhD dissertation, but will not receive conferral of the PhD degree until after July 1. What do I need to start the fellowship?
The PhD dissertation must be complete, successfully defended and the dissertation committee has signed off on the defense by July 1 of the fellowship year. The signed committee letter must be faxed, emailed or a copy mailed to our office. The scholar does not need to have ‘walked’ for graduation. (example: for a November 15, 2017 deadline- the fellowship year is 2018)
Application and Review
What is the application deadline?
The deadline for submitting the online application is November 15th at 11:59PM EST.
What needs to be submitted by the deadline?
Applicant materials that need to be submitted are:
- Cover letter addressed to Vice Chancellor for Research
- Curriculum vitae
- A statement of research plans (1-3 pages)
- A diversity statement on why you should be selected for this program (1–3 pages)
- Writing samples (e.g., publications and/or dissertation chapters). For Visual Artists, include a portfolio of artwork in lieu of writing samples.
- Two references (name and email) for letters of recommendation.
What information do I share with my references?
References are able to upload letters to the application system once a completed application is successfully submitted. Please notify references of their extended deadline (November 22) to submit letters. An email with a link and instructions for uploading the letter to the application site will be sent to the name and email provided in the application. Applicants are unable to upload letters of recommendation to the application site. Late letters of recommendation will not be accepted.
Can reference letters be uploaded or sent by a dossier service?
To have dossier services upload the recommendation letters directly into the online system, please enter the name of each of your references into the application system as well as the dossier service email. Once the applicant has completed the application, a link will be sent to the email addresses entered with instructions to upload letters to the application site.
Do I need to select a mentor before applying?
No. If selected for the program, a mentor will be appointed to you by the host department.
Can I check the status of recommendation letters by my references to see whether they have been uploaded into the application system?
An applicant can check the status of recommendation letters until the online application system closes on November 15. After the deadline, you may email Jennifer Pruitt, Jennifer_pruitt@unc.edu, to check the status of recommendation letters.
How is the selection process handled?
Shortly after the application period closes, department chairs and review committees participate in online review of candidates’ submitted materials. If a department opts to nominate a candidate (s) for the fellowship program, the chair will submit a recommendation letter to the selection committee. The selection committee, consisting of staff and faculty from different UNC units, will review all materials associated with department nominations and select finalists for fellowship offer. Final notification and offer from the program coordinator by mid-February.
When will the fellowship finalists be notified of selection?
All applicants will receive notification by the end of February.
