Coalition for Next Generation Life Science Data

UNC has joined more than 35 universities and research institutes as members of the Coalition for Next Generation Life Science (CNGLS). The coalition’s goal is to bring transparency to Ph.D. and postdoctoral training by providing the data necessary to make informed decisions about one’s training and long-term career goals.

As a coalition member, OPA is committed to collecting and publishing data using common standards on:

  • Demographics of postdoctoral scholars by gender, underrepresented minority status, and citizenship status.
  • Median time in postdoctoral status at the institution.
  • Career outcomes for postdoctoral alumni, classified by job sector and career type using a standard taxonomy.

Future Data Across All Disciplines

While many of our postdocs are in the life sciences, OPA serves postdoctoral scholars in all disciplines, schools, and colleges across the University. The CNGLS is the first step toward providing meaningful training and career outcome data. Data that includes the broader postdoctoral population (e.g., Humanities and Social Sciences) will be published soon.

I’m grateful for the guidance of the OPA career coaches. When I scheduled my initial appointment, I was preparing for an interview amid a time of complicated career decision-making. The coaching sessions helped me think through the important issues and develop a plan for going forward. The interview advice was invaluable and helped greatly. I was offered the position. – UNC Postdoc
