Meet Our Staff
Nathan has over 10 years’ experience in Research Development and pre-award Sponsored Research Administration. As Director of UNC’s Office of Research Development, he constantly looks for new ways to support the research mission of the university. Prior to joining UNC in 2016, Nathan led a large and complex proposal support effort at New York University (NYU) within the Office of Sponsored Research. Over the years, Nathan has supported dozens of successful large scale proposal efforts, across a number of federal, state, and private grant-making agencies. He holds an MBA in Finance, Marketing, and Strategy from NYU, and a BA in Chemical Biology and Philosophy from Boston University.
Jonathan oversees the SPIN funding database, conducts funding workshops and consultations, and handles special projects to support the director with strategic planning. Jonathan comes to the Office of Research Development with a background in course instruction, workshop development, career development, and program administration. Jonathan earned an MA in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and dual BAs in English and Communication from University of Kentucky.
Alexia supports teams of researchers with large, inter-disciplinary proposals. She also consults with faculty on funding sources and proposal strategy, and manages the Creativity Hubs Pilot Award program. Alexia received her PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia in 2007.

Limited Submissions Coordinator
Denise manages the University’s limited submission process, coordinates the early faculty investigator workshop series, and organizes external engagement with funding agencies. Denise holds an MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After several years as a faculty member in the School of Social Work, Denise joined ORD full-time to support faculty across campus with their research.
Executive Assistant to the Director
Gail’s expertise covers a broad range of administrative, financial, internal grant coordination, and personnel management functions. Gail has provided over 22 years of service to UNC-Chapel Hill working in several offices under the Vice Chancellor for Research, and she is uniquely qualified to support ORD. Gail was a founding staff member of ORD, where she played an integral role in structuring office policies, procedures, and standards of operations. Gail holds an AA in Human Resources Management from Durham Technical Community College and a BA in Biblical Studies from His Kingdom Ministry Theological Seminary.
