UNC researchers have access to many different resources when seeking and identifying funding opportunities. Resources include funding mechanisms exclusive to the University, a campus subscription to InfoEd Global’s SPIN, and searchable databases for federal, public, and private funding opportunities. We strongly encourage researchers to diversify their funding searches by utilizing more than one resource.

Funding Programs Administered by Office of Research Development

The Office of Research Development oversees several funding programs on behalf of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Internal funding opportunities are designed to support foundational research and creative practice, cover publication expenditures, and offset travel costs related to visiting extramural sponsors.

SPIN Funding Database

The Office of Research Development provides subscription access to InfoEd Global’s SPIN database. The database contains a comprehensive selection of over 40,000 federal, public, and private funding opportunities. All current UNC faculty, staff, students, and postdoctoral scholars are eligible for SPIN user profiles.

Grants.gov

Grants.gov is the federal government’s comprehensive grant opportunities database, with funding opportunities from all federal sponsors. Grants.gov also provides educational resources for applicants and research administrators.

Foundation Directory Online

For researchers seeking private support from foundations and corporations, the Foundation Directory Online is an invaluable resource. Foundation Directory Online contains information about over 140,000 U.S. foundations.

Access to the Foundation Directory is managed by the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Please contact Michelle Arroyo, mvarroyo@email.unc.edu, for more information.
