Students in the Pro Bono Program at UNC School of Law are working on a multi-year, multi-pronged effort aimed at providing North Carolinians with the informational tools they need to assess the safety of their well water.

UNC-Led CORVASEQ Surveillance Program Detects Omicron Variant in North Carolina

The Coronavirus Variant Sequencing (CORVASEQ) Surveillance Program, led by a team of UNC researchers, detected the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant in North Carolina. Together, members of the program at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, Duke, Wake Forest, and East Carolina have sequenced more than tens of thousands of samples from COVID-19 positive patients to track the spread and development of the virus across the state.

SURF grant advances UNC microplastics research in western North Carolina

Last year, UNC-Chapel Hill junior Chloe Hall received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), which she used to continue her research that began in the fall of 2021 at the Highlands Field Site. Her studies focus on microplastics in local rivers and she looks for correlations between storm events and microplastic concentrations in these freshwater systems.
