Research Science Training Wave 2: Frequently Asked Questions

by Brent Eisenbarth

The Research Science and Security office is launching the University of North Carolina’s research security (RS) training program. We are now rolling out the second wave of the training to campus.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is RS training?

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill developed research security training to comply with National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) and the CHIPS and Science Act.

After completing RS training, researchers should be equipped to apply research security principles to their work and navigate compliance functions during a project.

RS training is tailored to UNC policy and process.

How is RS training structured?

RS training has four modules:

  1. The Tenets of Research Security
  2. Data, Disclosure, and the Research Lifecycle
  3. Travel and Research Abroad
  4. Global Collaboration in Discovery

Who needs to take RS training?

RS training is required for researchers listed in the following roles on federal research projects:

  • Lead Principal Investigator, Principal Investigator, Investigator
  • Postdoctoral Research Associate
  • Fellow (Including NIH Fellowship)
  • Clinical Research Coordinator
  • Senior/Key Participant
  • Faculty Advisor
  • New Lead Principal Investigator

RS training is recommended to the broader campus community.

Please note: In Phase 1, RS training was only assigned to Department of Energy grant awardees.

How will I know when I need RS training?

Research Science and Security will activate Carolina Talent notifications this month (July, 2025).

Additionally, RAMSeS sends a notification to researchers that need training at proposal.

Be advised that training completion data is fed from Carolina Talent into RAMSeS on an hourly basis.

How long does it take to complete RS training?

RS training takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

How frequently do I need to complete RS training?

Complete RS training on an annual basis. This reflects certain sponsor requirements.

How do I access RS training?

RS training is available in Carolina Talent at go.unc.edu/research-security. You can also view your transcript in Carolina Talent under “Learning” > “View Your Transcript”

I work for a different institution besides UNC. How do I complete Research Security training?

Everyone has a responsibility to practice research security in their work. Our modules are tailored to UNC processes.

External researchers must complete their home institution’s Research Security training requirements. If their home institution does not have a Research Security program (i.e., a small company), then must complete the National Science Foundation’s compliant Research Security program for their work with UNC.

How can I provide feedback on the RS training?

We hope you will provide feedback to help us improve the training. Upon completion of the modules, you will receive a completion email with a link to an anonymous survey. You are also welcome to contact the us directly.

What should I do if I encounter a technical issue?

Contact Research Science and Security. Here are some common fixes:

  • Copy and paste go.unc.edu/research-security into your browser.
  • Use Firefox or Chrome to access the training.
  • Verify that you have access to Carolina Talent.
    • If you do not have Carolina Talent access, and you are UNC Staff, then your HR representative likely needs to reactivate your job profile in Connect Carolina.

Who should I contact with comments or questions?

For questions or comments, please contact the Research Science and Security. Thank you.
