A message from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

As part of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s (OVCR) continued commitment to building an exceptional intellectual community and advancing excellence in research and innovation, we are pleased to announce a new initiative. The Catalyst Faculty Research Cluster Program aims to advance impactful interdisciplinary scholarship at Carolina through the recruitment and retention of scholars within strategic research clusters.

Cluster hiring provides the opportunity to attract exceptional early-career faculty whose scholarship will have transformational impact across our research enterprise and institutional environment.

The strategic research theme for 2025 is Brain, Behavior, and Well-being.

We invite proposals for hires who will create a synergistic approach to addressing this intentionally broad and critical area of research, with a focus on scholarship that improves the human condition with tangible impacts. Proposals can encompass areas from the molecular level to social and environmental systems to neuroaesthetics, and they must have interdisciplinary strengths that exceed the sum of their parts. We encourage applications that integrate a wide range of disciplines, from the arts and humanities to medicine and population health.

Program Overview:

  • Funding and streamlined recruitment process for three tenure-track, early-career faculty positions in academic departments
  • Competitive salary support (up to $100,000/year)
  • Tailored onboarding, professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities for the disciplinary focus of the hires
  • A collaborative environment to foster research success and career advancement

Eligibility:

Proposals are invited from all faculty-appointing units at UNC-Chapel Hill. Each proposal must demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration by involving at least two distinct schools, colleges, and research centers/institutes to advance scholarship in the area of brain, behavior, and well-being.

How to Apply:

Proposals are accepted biennially via online form. Proposals for 2025 cluster hires are due October 18, 2024.

Please visit this page to find out more detailed information about the program, proposal requirements, and upcoming deadlines, or to submit an application on behalf of a cluster.

We look forward to receiving your proposals!
