Effective August 22, Carley Emerson will serve as director of the Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE). The OHRE is responsible for ethical and regulatory oversight of research at Carolina that involves human subjects, as well as supporting and overseeing the work of the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).

As director, Emerson will be responsible for assuring that the actions of the OHRE are done in compliance with federal, state, local, and institutional regulations, guidelines, and procedures. She will oversee the OHRE staff, Carolina’s IRBs, and other working groups. In addition, Emerson will ensure that all OHRE staff and IRB members, principal investigators, study teams, and university officials are provided with on-going training and education as needed.

Emerson is a human subjects research professional with over 20 years of experience in many capacities. Most recently, she served as the director of the human research protections office and IRB at the Carillion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia.
