Postdoc Research Cafe: How to Heal a Broken Heart

January 16 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart attack, and 1 in 5 of these are silent. After a heart attack, the affected muscle dies and is replaced by a scar that doesn’t beat. Many patients will eventually need a heart transplant as that scar fails to keep up with the need to move blood throughout the body, but what if we could use cutting edge science to turn the scar directly into new muscle? Hear from Dr. Spurlock as he develops strategies to direct this transformation and mend a broken heart! This is a broad talk that is open to everyone – no science background required!

PDA Research Café is a free series, organized by postdocs, to share the exciting research being carried out at UNC with the local community. All talks are delivered by engaging professionals who are leading experts in their fields of research. Talks take place on the first Tuesday of every 2nd month at TRU Deli Sandwich and Wine Bar in Chapel Hill (https://www.trudeli.com). No background knowledge is required – everyone is welcome!
