Clinical Rotations in Laboratory Animal Medicine
The Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at UNC offers 2-4 week on-site clinical laboratory animal externship opportunities for veterinary students with an expressed interest in laboratory animal medicine during their clinical year(s). Primary mentorship is provided by DCM faculty and resident veterinarians. Externs are expected to be active participants in the experience and will participate in daily departmental activities, including but not limited to:
- Clinical case and enrichment management
- DCM training classes
- Regulatory oversight
- Protocol development
- Operations and husbandry practices
- Departmental meeting attendance and presentations
- Resident didactic training through the Research Triangle Laboratory Animal Training Program (RTLATP)
- Tours of DCM and associated core facilities
