Administrative Updates

Critical update to NIH Public Access Policy

by Carleigh Gabryel

To the Carolina research community,

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced that the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy will now apply to all articles accepted for publication on or after July 1, 2025.

Due to significant policy changes and the new, accelerated implementation timeline, it is important for all NIH-funded researchers to understand the requirements and adjust their research plans to comply with them to avoid jeopardizing their current and future funding opportunities.

Please see the University Libraries’ guide to NIH Public Access Policy for up-to-date information. This guide includes key policy information, PubMed Central submission guidance, and a wealth of other materials to facilitate policy compliance. Should you have additional questions, you may request a consultation with your school or unit’s liaison librarian or Barrie Hayes, Bioinformatics and Research Data Librarian.

For the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, the UNC Research Data Management Core (RDMC) offers a suite of services, which includes the basic data management service provided to all sponsored programs subject to the policy. RDMC also offers additional services for projects that require more advanced support. Information on these services is available on the RDMC website.
