In a move to strengthen research collaboration across the state and support the goals of Carolina’s Research Roadmap, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is implementing a new pricing model for its core facilities. Effective January 1, 2025, all UNC System institutions will be eligible to access UNC-Chapel Hill’s core facilities at the internal breakeven rate.
Launched earlier this year, the Research Roadmap outlines a comprehensive plan to enhance Carolina’s research assets and maximize the impact of UNC Research. Key goals include creating sustainable funding models for research facilities and equipment and fostering greater community-engaged and applied research. The new pricing model for core facilities directly aligns with these goals.
Benefits of the New Model
- Enhanced Collaboration: Affordable access to UNC-Chapel Hill’s core facilities will incentivize increased research collaboration across the state, fostering new discoveries and knowledge sharing.
- Increased Accessibility: Researchers at institutions with less robust research infrastructure will now have more affordable access to UNC-Chapel Hill’s advanced technology and expertise.
This new opportunity builds upon our existing reciprocal agreement with North Carolina State University. This agreement allows researchers from each university to access the other’s core facilities at the internal rate. This model has demonstrably fostered collaboration between the two institutions’ research communities. Expanding this approach to encompass all UNC System institutions builds upon this success.
By extending internal rates to the broader UNC System, Carolina aims to increase access to its world-class core facilities. This will promote research collaboration throughout North Carolina, providing researchers across the state with access to cutting-edge technologies and opportunities they may not have otherwise.
