A message from Vice Chancellor for Research Penny Gordon-Larsen and Vice Chancellor for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development Dedric A. Carter

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development (Innovate Carolina) and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research share a unique partnership. Through our combined efforts, UNC-Chapel Hill’s research positively impacts our local communities, the state of North Carolina, and beyond. Within this collaboration, the Institute for Convergent Science plays a significant role. It is a catalyst for commercialization and innovation ecosystem-building for our faculty and emerging academic innovators.

With the expanding mission of Innovate Carolina, we’ve carefully considered the placement for the institute. We’ve concluded that integrating ICS within Innovate Carolina best aligns with our collective strategic goals. We believe this shift will enhance our positioning and leverage the focused strengths of our units. The new alignment is effective immediately, and Dr. Greg Copenhaver, currently Director of ICS, will report to the Vice Chancellor for IEED and Chief Innovation Officer. The close manner in which our units work together promotes a smooth transition with minimal impact.

We are confident this change will position ICS and the University for continued success and growth. Thank you for your dedication and strong support. We value the contributions of you and your teams, and we look forward to the path ahead.
