UNC NRP January 2022 Education Session: Working with Transgender Research Subjects (online)

January 20, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Research studies of all types tend to fail to represent trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming (TNBGNC) populations in manners that recognize their presence and realities, and lead to conclusions that are ultimately weakened by the overgeneralization of sexed and gendered data. As such, researchers have a duty both to the populations they are researching with and the disciplines within which they work in terms of knowledge and representation of TNBGNC populations in their research design and presentation of data. As medical professionals, researchers, and former research subjects who both identify as trans, we will provide participants with information about terminology, cultural competency, and changes to research design and the physical spaces in which studies are conducted that will allow participants to leave with an understanding of how to interact with and serve TNBGNC research subjects. While this training is relevant to researchers in all fields, this training will be especially relevant to those who conduct research focusing on reproductive health, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, substance use disorders, and/or homelessness due to high occurrence rates within the TNBGNC population. Sponsored by UNC Network for Research Professionals.
