Candida quantum leap: Moving beyond commensalism/parasitism

May 26, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Dr. Ramiro Murata holds a DDS, MS and PhD in Pharmacology/Microbiology from UNICAMP in Brazil. In addition, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology/Virology at New York University. His laboratory’s primary research focus is to understand how a human oral microbiome (bacteria, virus and fungi) interacts with its host, and to lay the groundwork for the development of new antimicrobial therapies. Recently, his research group has focused on investigating the host-Candida-HIV interactions. Unraveling the mechanisms that microorganisms use in a competitive, cross-kingdom environment would not only deepen our understanding of microbial pathogenesis but also provide important insights into novel pathways that are amenable for the development of new antimicrobial drugs. His research program addresses biomedical therapies using the interrelationships between pharmacognosy and molecular biology. This type of investigation often involves attempting to understand a sequence of events at the molecular level of interaction between natural molecules and microorganisms to predict its in vivo antimicrobial potential.
