Encoding and Recoding Difference: AI, PR and Corporate Racial Responsibility
This presentation explores how artificial intelligence contributes to the social construction of race, reinforces existing forms of racial discrimination and creates new disparities. It uses the lens of corporate racial responsibility theory to examine both the corporation – a driving force behind AI – as well as AI-based technologies. The presentation also shows how AI reproduces biases as well as has the potential to reduce them, helping to ensure a fairer, more equitable and harmonious society. Extending extant scholarly and industry conversations about public relations and AI, the presentation argues that it is imperative to avoid encoding the inequities of the past into the present and future. It also maintains that public relations has an important role to play in this process.
