Aalyia Sadruddin: Death Matters: Notes on Aging and Time in Rwanda
February 18 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
On February 18, 2022, Aalyia Sadruddin, Assistant Professor in Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present “Death Matters: Notes on Aging and Time in Rwanda” as part of the Carolina Population Center’s 2021-2022 Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series.
About Aalyia Sadruddin:
I am a cultural and medical anthropologist who writes and teaches on issues related to aging, care, and political culture in postconflict societies. Over the last decade, I have carried out ethnographic research in Rwanda with elderly women and men who witnessed multiple episodes of political and ethnic conflict between the late 1950s and early 1990s. Specifically, I trace how members of this generation navigate fundamental aspects of everyday life—such as dealing with the passage of time, providing bodily care, and preparing for death—in order to think through the complex meanings of the ordinary.
Prior to joining the Department of Anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Watson Institute of International & Public Affairs at Brown University.
