Effective 11/14/2022 Kristen Katopol to serve as the UNC OHRE Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs and Compliance.

Kristen Katopol comes to UNC Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE) from Dartmouth Hitchcock Health, where she served as Director of the Human Research Protection Program, providing chief administrative and programmatic support for the Institutional Review Board, assuming responsibility for the oversight of all research involving human subjects. Kristen supervised the ethical and technical review of proposals requiring IRB review and she provided consultation, assistance, and information regarding the review process to the research community.  Kristen’s experience also includes Director of the Human Research Protection Program at Georgetown University, providing administration and oversight for Georgetown’s six Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), supporting the conduct of human subject’s research to staff and students on all campuses, as well as the medical center.  Kristen’s 20+ years of human subject protection experience also includes site manager and Human Subjects Protection Scientist at Ft. Detrick, where she managed a large Department of Defense research portfolio, supervised a team of Human Subject Protection Scientists, and worked to solve complex issues surrounding human subject protocols and regulations. Prior to her work with the DOD, Kristen was the IRB administrator for the St. Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Outside of work hours, Kristen enjoys cooking, riding her Peloton bike, watching and attending sporting events, and hiking.

In Kristen’s role with OHRE, she is responsible for oversight, management and support of regulatory affairs and compliance within the Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE).
