500.23 Award Transfers: Changes in PI and/or Institutional Ownership
Responsible Officer: Director
Responsible Unit: Award Management
Effective date: July 1, 2008
Last revised on: July 21, 2011
Sponsor notification and prior approval is required when there is a significant change in Principal Investigator (PI) status, including a change in the PI’s percentage of effort (a reduction or increase of 25%), or relocation of the PI and/or award from one institution to another.
When either type of transfer is anticipated, either to or from UNC-Chapel Hill, the PI is required to consult an Award Manager in the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) for guidance in requesting approval from the sponsor.
Reason for Policy
Consultation with OSR when the possibility of a transfer of a PI and/or award exists is necessary for a smooth changeover between institutions and PIs.
Occasionally, the sponsor may determine that for the success of the project, the work must take place at the original institution. When that occurs, proper arrangements are coordinated between the administering department and OSR for the work to continue under the direction of a different PI.

OSR Research Tool Kits
Questions and concerns can be submitted online at Ask OSR or by using the OSR staff directory. Within RAMSeS, the “Speak to Someone” option assists in locating the staff member best suited to address project-specific issues.
The policies in the Office of Sponsored Research Policies & Procedures Manual supersede any OSR policies, procedures and appendices previously included in the University Business Manual, a publication of UNC Chapel Hill’s Division of Finance.
