Join the Community of Science
One way to tell the story of your research is through your Community of Science faculty expertise profile. North Carolina government officials, university administrators, development officers, potential collaborators, and others looking for a researcher with specific expertise can access UNC's COS Faculty Expertise database. It's also an excellent resource for chairs and deans to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration or for graduate students looking for mentors in their field.

To ensure that your story is being told accurately on UNC's expertise database, we urge all faculty and researchers to update their expertise profiles to reflect recent accomplishments, new publications, and current research interests. You may log in to your profile at http://workbench.cos.com to do this. If you need assistance in updating your profile or locating your COS username and password (not your Onyen), please contact the GrantSource Library at 919/962-3463.

We invite all new faculty to join the COS global network of scientists and scholars, which includes Carolina, our sister UNC system institutions, and approximately 700 other universities and research institutes. COS services will help you find funding, locate colleagues, and promote your research. In addition to the COS Faculty Expertise database, COS includes the Funding Opportunities database of more than 23,000 grants updated daily.

Funding Alert Services
Through your COS Expertise profile, you can receive the COS Funding Alert, a weekly email funding update, tailored to your individual research interests. Even if you're already receiving an alert, you can fine tune your alert to include new research areas. For assistance in establishing or updating your Funding Alert, please contact the GrantSource Library at gs@unc.edu or 919/962-3463.

In addition to COS, other discipline- or agency-specific funding alert services are available. The National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Department of Education all offer free alert services for their agency's announcements. GrantsNet, provided by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, provides an email update focusing on biological and medical sciences. See the GrantSource Library web page for more information about these alert services.

How Hard is it to Get a GAANN?
The U.S. Department of Education recently announced the FY03 competition for the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program which supports graduate fellowships in biology, chemistry, computer and information science, engineering, geological and related sciences, math, and physics. According to the Federal Assistance Monitor, in recent years about 40 percent of all GAANN applications were successful, and most were from major universities. Furthermore, two-thirds of these awards were near the minimum award level (approximately $115K). If you plan to ask for more, officials advise that you build a strong case documenting the need.

For more information about GAANN, refer to the funding opportunity.
