Funding Tips
Sun Microsystems Collaborative Research
Program
Sun Microsystems is interested in starting communication between UNC-Chapel
Hill researchers and Sun engineers to explore areas of joint interest
in internet/intranet technology, wireless activity, services (N1 and
SunOne), and other appropriate technologies in hardware and software.
Through Sun’s Collaborative Research program, Sun engineers hope
to establish long-term relationships with Carolina faculty to collaborate
on research and technology projects. Sun is interested in ideas and technologies
that will have commercial importance in two to five years and will help
provide direction to Sun engineering and product groups.
Funding is available in the range of $40,000-50,000 for student programs
and up to $100,000-150,000 for faculty research projects. Multi-year
projects are preferred, but year-to-year projects and renewals are possible.
Use of Sun Microsystems products is not a requirement. Deliverables such
as papers or presentations will be required (no products).
For more information about the Collaborative Research program, with
examples of some active collaborations, refer to this web
site. You may also want to look at other programs in Sun’s
Strategic Programs portfolio, designed to create business partnerships
with higher education and K-12 institutions. These include Sun Academic
Excellence grants, Centers of Excellence, EduSoft, Cisco Networking Academy,
and others. For more information, click

funding for your department’s research, training, and program
needs. The GrantSource Librarian will demonstrate some online resources
that faculty and staff can use to identify funding sources in your
discipline. You will also learn how to set up a Community of Science
Funding Alert, an electronic customized precision search for targeted
grant information. Other topics will include tips for conducting a
funding search and an overview of resources available to researchers
through the GrantSource Library. Please contact the Library at 962-3463

New to UNC-Chapel Hill? Move Your COS Faculty Expertise Profile
Too
If you are a new faculty member or researcher who came from another Community
of Science member university, you can quickly transfer your existing
expertise profile to UNC’s COS faculty expertise database. All
you need to do is add a “present position” indicating your
new appointment and update your previous appointment to include the date
that it ended. Once the position changes have been saved, your profile
will display your new affiliation to this university. Welcome to Carolina!
If you need assistance in updating your Faculty Expertise Profile, please
contact the GrantSource Library for an individual consultation or plan
to attend one of our many workshops.
