Fine-Tuning Your COS Funding Alert Profile
Perhaps you already have a Community of Science Funding Alert but are not getting the search results you would like? Or your research interests may have changed in recent years? We have noticed that many faculty members are still receiving results from the default "All Keywords" or "Introductory" Funding Alert search. This very broad search uses only the keywords that have been "assigned" to your profile based on your initial registration and often results in a number of irrelevant records and inbox clutter. However, your COS Funding Alert can be customized to run very specific searches. Please contact the GrantSource Library at 929-3463 or gs@unc.edu for assistance in fine-tuning your funding alert profile or consult this tip sheet.

How Are HUD Funds Distributed?
While funds from several major programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are awarded by formula to state or local entities, at least $3 billion in discretionary grants will be awarded competitively. The request for proposals for most HUD discretionary programs is released in one massive Super Notice of Funding Availability (SuperNOFA), which tells you what funds are available and how to apply. Look for the FY04 HUD SuperNOFA, with information about the Universities and Colleges programs, the Community Outreach Partnerships Centers (COPC), Research Grant programs, and others, to be released later this spring.

How to Approach Funders Who Make Awards “By Invitation Only”
When searching foundations for possible funding prospects, you might find some guidelines that specify that grantmaking is “by invitation only.” If you believe that your project is a close match with the foundation’s mission, or if you have a good relationship with the foundation, there is nothing wrong with asking how one gets invited. Send them an inquiry letter or make a quick phone call. After review, the foundation then may invite you to send a full proposal.

COS Funding Opportunities Search By Activity Location
Including an Activity Location in your COS Funding Opportunities search is an ideal way to locate funding for faculty who need to do research in a particular country or state or to travel to another institution, laboratory, or archives.

When you specify a location in the COS Funding Opportunities search form, the results will include all awards which must be performed in that area or which may be performed in that area. The citizenship or legal residence of the researcher does not factor into Activity Location.

To select a location, use the Browse button in the Activity Location section of the search form. Use the browser to move through the choices of locations and make your selections. When you have made your selection(s), close the browser window. You will return to the search form, where you may also choose to include the sub-entities or super-entities of your location as well funding opportunities for which the activity location is unrestricted or unspecified.
