Funding Tips

Searching for NIH and NSF Funding Opportunities
Did you know that you can search for funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation using databases of funding opportunities available at the GrantSource Library's web site? The Community of Science (COS) and the Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) are multidisciplinary international databases listing program announcements and requests for applications/proposals released by NIH, NSF, and other federal funding agencies. In addition, the Library's page links to the NIH Guide and the NSF Guide to Programs where you can access their funding databases directly. For help in locating federal funding, please contact the GrantSource Library at gs@unc.edu.

Funding for Anti-Terrorism Research
The GrantSource Library offers a web page that will interest Carolina researchers seeking sponsors for anti-terrorism research:
http://research.unc.edu/grantsource/anti-terrorism.html.

This useful resource includes information about federal terrorism-related research and development funding, with special emphasis on major initiatives and program areas. The page is updated frequently as new information is announced.

Faculty, research staff, and graduate students who want more information about federal and private funding opportunities related to terrorism (such as national and international security, sensor and surveillance technology, safety and disaster response, bioterrorism, and peace and international affairs) or any other academic discipline are invited to contact the GrantSource Library at gs@unc.edu. We can help you set up a customized alert service to notify you when funding opportunities arise in your specific area of interest.

Finding Travel Awards in Health and Medicine
The Community of Science (COS) Funding Opportunities Database includes records describing more than 23,000 sources of support from federal and private funding agencies. This database can be used to identify potential funding sources for research-related travel.

For example, here are some currently available travel awards from private funding agencies for Carolina faculty researchers in health and medicine. These awards support expenses arising from research activities, visiting lectureships or professorships, exchange programs, on-site observation, and more. This search is rather broad. If you wish to refine the search at all (e.g., specifying a range of deadlines or amounts; entering specific research interests or other terms which might define the subject you wish to study), click the "Refine Your Query" link at the top of the page. Anything you enter in the search form will be used to further refine the search.

If you have any questions about searching COS Funding Opportunities Database for travel or other awards, contact the GrantSource Library at gs@unc.edu.

Finding Sponsors for Projects Serving the Triangle Community of NC
The Triangle Community Foundation, a nonprofit philanthropic organization serving Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham, and Johnston counties, has announced a new grantmaking process, Philanthropy Central. This web-based portal is a one-stop marketplace for donors and nonprofit organizations such as UNC to discover and act upon their mutual interests in service to the Triangle community of North Carolina.

If your department is developing a project that will serve the Triangle area, you are invited to set up an Impact Profile in Philanthropy Central. This Profile will share information about your organization and its projects with potential donors. It will enable you to receive notices of specialized grant opportunities and gain access to the expertise as well as the funding of local philanthropists.

Larger organizations such as Carolina may submit as many profiles as benefit the organization. Each school, department, center, institute, or other unit is eligible to set up its own profile.
