FUNDING TIPS

Use Tags in COS to Organize Your Tracked Funding Records

When you find funding records in COS Funding Opportunities that you want to save, you can track up to 200 of them on your COS Workbench. To organize the list of tracked records, don't forget to use tags, or labels that you create and assign to each tracked record. You can use a tag you already created for other records, or make a new tag. Essentially, these tags create a filing system for your tracked records.

On your COS Workbench, you can click on a tag to view that subset of your tracked records. You can also click "share" to email that group of tracked records to other people interested in the same topic.

If you need assistance in using tracking, tagging, or other features on your COS Workbench, contact the GrantSource Library (962-3463) to schedule a consultation.

Funding for Travel and Conferences

Are you making plans for travel to attend a conference, conduct research, or engage in other scholarly activities next year? To identify potential funding sources for travel, you can use the COS Funding Opportunities database to look for funding types such as "Meeting or Conference or Seminar" and "Travel." Add other search terms such as keyword and activity location to find funding for researchers in all disciplines.

For assistance in identifying travel, conference, or other types of support, contact the GrantSource Library (919-962-3463) or visit the library's website.

News from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund

On October 20 the American Chemical Society (ACS) alerted investigators that proposals submitted to the ACS Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) may face funding restrictions. These restrictions are in response to the impact that the global economic situation is having on the amount of funds available for PRF grants. Proposals already in the ACS system, such as the Undergraduate New Investigator, Undergraduate Research, New Directions, and Doctoral New Investigator programs, as well as new proposals to spring funding programs, may be affected. To view the Dear Colleague letter, click here.

If you had planned to submit a proposal in November 2008 for consideration at the May 2009 ACS meeting, please do so. Your proposal will be given full scientific consideration, and ACS will make every attempt to maintain funding rates that are similar to those in the past few years. However, for funding proposals submitted in November, the award timeline will not be determined until January 2009, when the total amount available for PRF grants will be known.

ACS also launched an annual report website which contains information about PRF, grants awarded, success stories of PRF researchers, and more.
