FUNDING TIPS
Multidisciplinary Research Grants from NC Biotech
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NC Biotech) is offering Multidisciplinary
Research Grants (MRG) to encourage collaboration among three or more
North Carolina-based scientists from different disciplines working together
to advance the state of the art in biotechnology. The MRG funds the development
of preliminary data to support federal grant applications. Awards provide
up to $250,000 for a maximum project duration of two years.
Proposals with a clear potential for commercial benefit or for strengthening
infrastructure for future research, are more competitive. MRGs do not support
the extension of an established collaboration or research projects that already
have federal funding. Applications are due by September 2, 2005. READ MORE
If you would like assistance from the Office of Research Development in planning and developing your proposal, contact Gail Cummings. Email Karen Stone of the Carolina Roadmap office for help in preparing an application, including assistance with biosketches, budgets, tables, and editing. Funding for Anti-Terrorism Research
Investigators involved in anti-terrorism research can find information about potential funding opportunities on the GrantSource Library's Anti-Terrorism Research Funding web page. This resource has recently been updated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science's (AAAS) summary of the FY 2006 federal budget for combating terrorism. It also includes major new funding initiatives and program areas from both federal and private funding sponsors.
Carolina faculty and research staff interested in obtaining more information about funding related to terrorism are invited to contact the GrantSource Library for help in setting up a customized alert service to receive funding opportunities in specific research areas.
Foundation Funding for Children's Health
The Foundation Center has published “Foundation Giving for Children's Health,” which provides a detailed examination of US foundation health funding that specifically benefits children and youth. The May 2005 report chronicles changes in the top sponsors and their impact on funding trends, as well as the future outlook for children's health philanthropy. It also includes an essay from Grantmakers in Health on the changing role of grant makers in supporting children's health as well as a list of the top 15 US foundations in giving for children's health.
Key findings of the study include:
- the largest share of children's health funding went to the research and treatment of specific diseases;
- pediatrics and oral health training and research accounted for the fastest growth in funding; and
- general health care, followed by mental health, received the largest shares of grant dollars (excluding the Gates and Robert Wood Johnson foundations). READ MORE (pdf)
Sharing Funding Opportunities from COS with RecordShare
RecordShare is a function of the Community of Science (COS) database that allows researchers to notify colleagues of funding opportunities found while performing a funding search. At the top of every record, there is an envelope icon which pulls up the RecordShare form. Complete this form to send the funding opportunity record, along with a cover note, to up to five people.
The recipients will receive a message with the title and sponsor of the opportunity and a special RecordShare ticket hyperlink they can use to access the COS funding opportunity record from anywhere in the world. You can share records with those who do not subscribe to the COS database, but the ticket hyperlink expires after 14 days for non-subscribers. Click here for more information and help on using the COS Funding Opportunities database or contact the GrantSource Library.
