FUNDING TIPS

UNC Roadmap Office Activities Related to Diabetes, Stem Cell and Melanoma Research

The UNC Roadmap Office and the GrantSource Library have collaborated to launch two specialized web pages with funding information for Carolina researchers conducting studies on diabetes and stem cells. A third web page for melanoma research will be available on May 10. These resources provide information about both federal and private funding agencies, as well as how to get help at Carolina in identifying potential funding sources.

Foundation Giving Increases

The Foundation Center (FC) recently released its Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates: 2004 Preview, which analyzes the spending of more than 66,000 grant-making foundations. The preview reports a record $32.4 billion in foundation spending, a 6.9 percent increase from last year. The rise is attributed to a relative recovery of the stock market as well as new foundations. The number of grants that foundations have reported awarding also has increased. Almost one-third of the foundations surveyed reported awarding more grants in 2004 than in the previous year, and more than half of the foundations in the survey said they expected to increase their giving in 2005.

Although this information is promising to those seeking foundation money, the FC cautioned that foundation giving will probably grow more slowly in the coming year. "Foundations regained their footing in 2004," said FC President Sara Engelhardt, "but there will be no return to the boom years of the late 1990s soon. We are likely to see positive but unremarkable growth in foundation giving in the immediate future." READ MORE.

COS, A Funding Database for All Disciplines

Despite its name, Community of Science (COS) provides comprehensive funding opportunities in all disciplines. Sixteen years ago, the service focused on the physical science community, but the database has greatly expanded to make it a premier resource in all areas. Users can search more than 17,500 grants in fields ranging from the sciences to the arts and humanities in COS Funding Opportunities. In addition, COS Expertise's network of over 400,000 scholars and scientists make it easy to search profiles of researchers in a variety of disciplines throughout the world.

Remote Access to COS

Using your COS Workbench, you can still access all Community of Science (COS) services no matter where your summer may take you. Whether you will be working from home or on sabbatical in Japan, you will simply need to log into the COS Workbench to read your funding alerts, find a collaborator, or research a patent.

If you have forgotten your COS username and password, you can request them from the login page or contact the GrantSource library.
