The Cancer Genome Atlas
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have announced a new joint effort, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), which seeks to accelerate the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer through the application of genome analysis technologies, including large-scale genome sequencing.
NCI and NHGRI have each committed $50 million over three years to the pilot project to develop and test the complex science and technology framework needed to systematically identify and characterize the genetic mutations and other genomic changes associated with cancer. The pilot project will assess the feasibility of a full-scale effort to systematically explore the entire spectrum of cancer genomics. Participating Cancer Genome Characterization Centers , Genome Sequencing Centers , and Biospecimen Core Resources will be selected in 2006. Awards will be based on merit and programmatic needs of TCGA Pilot Project. READ MORE
