NIH Budget News
The FY 2008 federal budget was passed late last year, and included a one percent overall increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as larger increases in certain areas.
The NIH has now set funding priorities in its FY 2008 fiscal policy, reaffirming its commitment to boosting the pool of researchers by supporting new investigators and sustaining established researchers. More information on the FY 2008 Fiscal Operations, including specific funding strategies for ICs, will be posted February 6 at the website for NIH Extramural Financial Operations.
The NIH salary cap remains restricted to Executive Level I of the Federal Executive Pay scale, which increased January 1, 2008, from $186,600 to $191,300.
NSF Releases Science and Engineering Indicators
The National Science Board has released Science and Engineering Indicators 2008, the Board's biennial report on the state of science and engineering research and education in the United States.
NIH Working Group Calls for Big Changes to Peer Review and Grants
A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education highlighted some of the recommendations made by a working group convened by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the current peer review process and make recommendations.

NIH Issues New Public Access Policy
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced its new Public Access Policy regarding peer-reviewed publications. The new NIH Public Access Policy will ensure published NIH-funded research is accessible to the public, health care providers, educators and scientists and will help advance science and improve human health. It will take effect April 7, 2008.
In accordance with federal law, the NIH now requires the submission of published articles resulting from NIH-funded research to PubMed Central. These articles will be made publicly available on PubMed Central within 12 months of the publication date.
In addition to the Policy Guide notice, the NIH has created a website, answered FAQs, and offers a tutorial on article submission.
