UNC's Total Research Receipts Reach All-Time High in FY06

UNC-Chapel Hill’s sponsored research funding rose to $593.3 million in Fiscal Year 2006, up from $579.6 million in 2005. Health-related research continues to receive the bulk of research dollars, with the School of Medicine bringing in $288 million, according to data maintained by UNC's Office of Sponsored Research. The School of Public Health received $61 million and the College of Arts and Sciences received $60 million.

Senior Director of Post-award Services Passes Away

Scott Blackwood, senior director of post-award services in the Office of Sponsored Research, passed away on Sunday, August 27. For 34 years, Scott served UNC with unfailing dedication, compassion, and skill. His loss will be deeply felt by colleagues at UNC and elsewhere.

Excellence in Research Administration Award

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development has opened nominations for the third annual Excellence in Research Administration Award. This award recognizes a university employee for distinguished accomplishments in research administration. A $500 cash award will be presented to the winner. Nominations must be received by October 16, 2006.

Identifying Funding Sources Workshop for School of Public Health Faculty and Staff

Date: Wednesday, September 27
Time: 2:00-3:30 p.m.
Place: 307 Health Sciences Library (computer lab)

The GrantSource Library and the Office of Research of the School of Public Health invite faculty and staff to a hands-on workshop on identifying funding sources for your research, programs, and other scholarly endeavors. Susan Gramling, GrantSource Librarian, will provide time-saving tips for conducting a funding search and an overview of resources and services available to investigators through the Library. Each participant will have access to a computer for searching.

In this interactive short course, you will learn how to:

  • Make the most effective use of the COS and Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) multidisciplinary funding opportunity databases;
  • Set up a customized funding alert via COS and other funding alert services;
  • Search for funding using specialized funding resources such as Grants.gov, NIH Guide, and others;
  • Identify UNC internal funding opportunities; and
  • Research actual funded awards made by NIH, EPA, AHRQ, and other sponsors.

Technology Development Boot Camp

The Office of Technology Development, UNC Superfund Basic Research Program, and Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering will co-sponsor the Technology Development Boot Camp October 19 and 20. The workshop will cover the basics of technology transfer and development at Carolina. Topics will include UNC policies and procedures related to new inventions, intellectual property, licensing technology, and starting a company. Faculty, postdoctoral scholars, staff, and upper-level graduate students who are involved in research and other activities that may result in creation of intellectual property are welcome.

Fall Short Courses at the Odum Institute

The Odum Institute for Research in Social Science offers a series of short courses for social science researchers and students each semester. This fall, workshops will cover identifying funding sources, writing grant proposals, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, spatial analysis, statistical computing, and survey research. Most workshops are held in Manning Hall.

Commensal Bacteria in Health and Disease Symposium

Date: September 22
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Place: 4th floor Old Clinic Auditorium, School of Medicine

The Carolina Roadmap Program and the UNC-Chapel Hill Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease will co-sponsor a symposium on commensal bacteria. The symposium is designed to generate interest and collaboration in the Research Triangle area on the role of bacteria in health and disease. New Director of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center

David Harkey has been appointed the new director of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. For more than twenty years, Harkey has applied transportation engineering principles and research evaluation methods to improve highway safety. His work has included the development and teaching of safety intervention programs for engineers. He was previously the center’s deputy director, and has been functioning as its interim director since January.

New Evaluation Consultant at Odum Institute

Michael Foster has joined the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science as a part-time consultant on evaluation issues. A professor in the School of Public Health, Foster is an economist specializing in children’s health policy. He is currently an Associate Editor of Developmental Psychology.

Academic Job Search Workshops Offered by the Office of Postdoctoral Services

This fall the Office of Postdoctoral Services will host a series of workshops to assist current Carolina postdoctoral scholars with their search for academic positions. Topics will include the application process, creating a teaching portfolio, and interviews and negotiations at research universities and liberal arts colleges.

Free Statistical Consulting from Department of Statistics and Operations Research

UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Statistics and Operations Research offers free statistical consulting to the campus community. While completing their course requirements, graduate students enrolled in one of the department’s courses will work with investigators to provide statistical assistance. Although there are limits to what can be done in the context of the course, some contacts made during the course have led to ongoing joint research, grant proposals, and published papers in a variety of fields.

Film & Television Literature Index
More than 300 journal and magazine titles for film and television reviews, scholarly and critical analyses of cinema and television, and articles of popular interest about film and television.

China Academic Journals
Coverage extends back to 1979. Includes 1,700 journals in the humanities and social sciences, nearly all Chinese-language. Includes full text.
