RAMSeS Replaces Coeus

All sponsored research programs at Carolina are now being managed via RAMSeS (Research Administration Management System and eSubmission). RAMSeS is the system replacing Coeus, which was retired on June 30. Principal investigators (PIs) and research administrators will find a wider range of proposal management and enhanced tracking capabilities in RAMSeS.

Important new features of RAMSeS include:

  • Internal Processing Forms (eIPF) will be routed electronically. No longer will IPFs be hand-carried to affiliated departments for sign-off;
  • PIs will be required to provide separate certification of eIPFs; and
  • PIs can review the approval status of their proposals and track their entire research portfolio via the new My Research at Carolina web portal.

RAMSeS Research Contacts

In order for approving departments to be included on the eIPF routing list, departmental IPF Approvers must be set up in Research Contacts, a role-based infrastructure which RAMSeS utilizes. Most departments that submit research proposals on a regular basis have already been set up in Research Contacts. To check your department’s listing in Research Contacts, select your department from the drop-down list in the Research Contact Directory and press “view”.

If you have questions regarding your department’s listing, please contact your departmental Role Manager. If you are unsure as to whether or not your department has been set up, or to get your department set up in Research Contacts, contact Ellen Quinn at the Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS).

Getting Help and Training on RAMSes

ORIS has established a dedicated RAMSeS “help” phone number available for questions or inquiries. Dialing 843-2594 will connect callers with a knowledgeable information specialist (not a phone message tree).

Ongoing RAMSeS/Research Contacts training will be available in the coming weeks. For further details and information on dates, locations and registration, visit the Research at Carolina events website.

File Management Issues in Transitioning to RAMSeS

As questions have arisen during the transition to RAMSeS, the Office of Sponsored Research has issued a memo providing details on how RAMSeS will impact the day-to-day management of electronic as well as paper copies of sponsored research documents and files. This memo specifies what you should do if the sponsor requires complete electronic or paper file submissions or if they use a web-based application process. READ MORE (pdf)

Research Administration Training Opportunities from OSR

The Office of Sponsored Research has published its research administration training opportunities for July through December 2006. This includes the new training workshop for Research Administration Management System & eSubmission (RAMSeS), the replacement system for Coeus. In this session you will have an opportunity to try out the new systems and learn how they will help you prepare and process research information.

Other classes include:

  • Completing Grants.gov Electronic Forms (NEW);
  • Effort Certification (NEW);
  • Submitting Proposals through Grants.gov;
  • Utilizing the eRA Commons to Manage NIH Grants;
  • Reporting to Sponsor Agencies: Program Performance Reports, Financial Status Reports, and Notice of Termination Reply; and
  • Proposal Budgeting.

Changes in OSR Instructions for Subcontracts

The Office of Sponsored Research has changed instructions in their Proposal Development and Submission research toolkit. The changes include:

  • a distinction between subcontracts performed by another organization (outgoing subcontracts) and subcontracts performed by UNC (incoming subcontracts); and
  • more specific requirements regarding types of information needed in subcontracts.

If you would like your office’s internal funding opportunities included in the database, please contact the GrantSource Library.

American Cancer Society Grants and Grantsmanship Seminar at Carolina

The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is sponsoring a special seminar on American Cancer Society (ASC) Grants and Grantsmanship. William Phelps, ACS Scientific Program Director, will discuss the society’s funding opportunities and grantsmanship tips for submitting applications. Because many ACS funding opportunities are geared to junior investigators, senior postdoctoral scholars and young investigators are especially encouraged to attend.

The seminar will be held on July 21 from 10:30 to11:30 a.m. in the Plaza Conference Room at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Building. For a location map, click here.

Technology Development Boot Camp

The Office of Technology Development, UNC Superfund Basic Research Program, and Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering will co-sponsor the Technology Development Boot Camp October 19 and 20. The workshop will cover the basics of technology transfer and development at Carolina. Topics will include UNC policies and procedures related to making new inventions, intellectual property, licensing technology, and starting a company. The course is intended for faculty, postdoctoral scholars, staff, and upper-level graduate students who are involved in research and other activities. For details and to register, click here.

New Computer Science and Physics Project Manager in OTD

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) welcomes a new project manager, David Mason, on July 10. David will manage a portfolio of technologies from computer science and physics, and he will be responsible for expanding OTD’s efforts to commercialize information technologies, software, and physical-science inventions.

Prior to joining UNC, David spent a number of years at Red Hat, Inc. as manager of Linux Operating System Development and director of Advanced Development Labs. Most recently David has been running a consulting firm to assist businesses in adopting and implementing the Linux operating system.

New Authentication Procedure for Carolina’s Online Library Resources

The procedure for gaining off-campus access to UNC-Chapel Hill online library resources changed on July 6, 2006. In the past, a valid PID was required to authenticate affiliation with the university. The libraries have implemented a more secure procedure, including

  • university students, faculty, and staff supply their ONYEN and password;
  • UNC Hospital staff continue to use their PID; and
  • AHEC affiliates continue to authenticate in the current mode.

These new authentication procedures will affect off-campus use of the GrantSource Library’s two primary funding databases, COS and InfoEd SPIN. If you have difficulty accessing these databases, contact the GrantSource Library at 962-3463. READ MORE
