Inventors' Perspective of Technology Transfer at Carolina

This Carolina Innovations Seminar is sponsored by the Office of Technology Development and will provide an inventor's perspective on technology transfer at UNC-Chapel Hill. Several Carolina inventors will share their personal motivations for getting involved in tech transfer and discuss the challenges and benefits of the experience. IRB Guidance for Students
The Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are updating and clarifying policies for several categories of research involving human subjects. Additional guidance on student research and class projects (pdf) is now available on the Office of Human Research Ethics' website.
Workshop on Preparing an R21 Application Package

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) is offering a workshop on preparing electronic National Institutes of Health (NIH) R21 grant applications, which must now be submitted through Grants.gov. IM2.1 Workshop to Improve the Visual Communication of Science

Place: Sigma Xi Center, Research Triangle Park
Last summer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology sponsored its second Image and Meaning (IM2) workshop. The IM2 workshop brought together scientists, graphic designers, artists, computing experts, science communicators, and science-center professionals to work on problems in making and using pictures to enhance understanding of complex information.
Sigma Xi, MIT's Envisioning Science Project, and Harvard University 's Initiative for Innovative Computing, with further funding from the National Science Foundation, have developed a series of regional workshops that expand on the successful breakout sessions from the original IM2 workshop. Laboratory Hood Policy
Carolina has a new Laboratory Hood Policy that any researcher or lab intending to install a chemical hood should consult. The policy covers important points such as required assessments by Facilities Services, necessary approvals by offices such as Environmental Health and Safety, and mandatory testing that must be included in the cost of the project. Sponsored Program Office Move
On May 9, the School of Medicine 's Sponsored Programs Office will move to new offices on the first floor of the Bioinformatics Building , starting with room 1140C. The office will be unavailable on May 8th in order to prepare for the movers. Urgent requests will be accommodated as soon as phone and computer service is restored. Phone numbers, fax number, and CB number will remain the same.
New Funding for Research in Cardiovascular Biology
Dr. Hugh A. McAllister Jr. and his wife, Angela, have funded the "Hugh A. McAllister Jr., M.D. '66 Endowment for Cardiovascular Biology," to advance research in cardiovascular diseases at the School of Medicine's Carolina Cardiovascular Biology Center. The gift will allow the center to recruit promising young investigators, enable high-impact research that is not typically funded by the National Institutes of Health, and allow researchers to communicate the importance of their work to the community.
