SBIR/STTR National Conference Coming to RTP

Date: April 30 – May 3
Place: Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Conference Center , Research Triangle Park , NC

Registration is now open for the Spring 2007 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) National Conference, hosted by the NC Small Business and Technology Development Center . Participants will learn about the SBIR/STTR Program, including how to apply for, and what it takes to win, some of the $2 billion in U.S. Government R&D investments. The four-day conference will give participants the opportunity to meet and network with representatives from 11 participating federal agencies. For more information, and to register, click here.

RAMSeS Development Workspace Tool

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) and the Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) are pleased to announce the release of a “Development Workspace” tool within the RAMSeS (Research Administration Management System and eSubmission) application. The Dev Workspace tool enhances collaboration by providing a centralized location for investigators and other research team members to share proposal submission documents.

Major Challenges in Clinical Medicine: An Overview for Basic Scientists

Date: June 25 – July 25
Place: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The Carolina Roadmap Executive Committee is offering a one-month training course, including lectures, mentored lab time, and self-study, to help basic science graduate students and postdoctoral scholars incorporate translational and clinical aspects into their research. The program will provide a brief but in-depth experience with translational research for basic scientists at early stages of their careers to help them decide whether involvement in translational research should be one of their career goals. There is no cost to participate.

What Investors Look For and How to Position Yourself for Private Investment

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) Innovation Seminar series will sponsor a panel of venture capitalists who will discuss the ins and outs of their decision-making process and what successful companies do to position themselves for private investment. The panel includes Garheng Kong of Intersouth Partners, Joel Eisner of Cato BioVentures, David Jones of Southern Capitol, and Sean McCarthy of A.M. Pappas & Associates. The panel discussion will be followed by an audience question-and-answer period.

Scientific Research Equipment and Supplies Vendor Forum

Date: Thursday, March 15
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Place: Medical Biomolecular Research Building

UNC - Chapel Hill Purchasing Services will be holding a Purchasing - PI Nexus on March 15, 2007. This vendor forum will offer researchers and staff an opportunity to see the latest research equipment from a variety of companies.

IACUC Training and Compliance Update

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will once again offer regular wet-lab training sessions. IACUC will also hold two lectures for mouse-breeders: Mandatory Mouse-Breeding Policy and Basic Mouse-Breeding Colony Management. For registration, location and schedule information, click here.

HSL/SPH Office of Research Seminar

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) and the School of Public Health (SPH) Office of Research are co-sponsoring a seminar series to introduce participants to tools that can streamline the process for managing and organizing information for proposal writing, literature reviews, developing posters, and writing articles for publication. Seminar 2 – Finding Resources will focus on which database(s) to use, electronic resources, and other topics to get the research process started. OPS Workshop: Writing from the Reader's Perspective

The Office of Postdoctoral Services (OPS) is sponsoring a workshop focusing on improving writing skills to enhance all types of scholarly writing, including proposals, academic journals, dissertations, and more. Dr. George Gopen, a professor in the Department of English at Duke University , will conduct the workshop. New Staff at OTD

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) welcomes Dr. Todd Huffman to our office as a Technology Development Associate. Dr. Huffman comes to us from the University of Virginia Patent Foundation.

Public Health Research Expertise Database

A faculty expertise search is available in the School of Public Health (SPH) Research Database, which allows users to search for current public health research or individual researchers at SPH. You can search by research topic, faculty name, or search the entire SPH website.
