Identifying Funding Sources for Social Science Research: Workshop for Faculty and Staff
Date: Tuesday, September 21
Time: 12-1:30 p.m.
Place: 01
Manning Hall
The GrantSource Library and the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science invite interested faculty and staff to a workshop on searching for funding sources for your research, departmental programs, and other scholarly endeavors. Susan Gramling, GrantSource Librarian in the Office of Information and Communications, will provide tips for conducting a funding search and an overview of resources available to researchers through the GrantSource Library.
You will learn how to
- make the most effective use of the Community of Science (COS) and Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) multidisciplinary funding opportunity databases (how to search, important features, pros and cons);
- set up a customized funding alert in COS and other agency specific mailing lists (such as NSF, ED, NIH, CDC);
- search for funding using specialized funding resources such as FundSource (behavioral and social sciences), FedGrants.gov (federal), GrantsNet (biomedical and science education), and others; and
- identify UNC internal funding opportunities.
Advance registration is requested; please go to http://cfx.research.unc.edu/res_classreg/. Your registration will be confirmed by email. For more information, email susan_gramling@unc.edu or phone 962-7766.
Graduate students are invited to attend one of the GrantSource Library's workshops for graduate students. See http://research.unc.edu/grantsource/instruction.html.
Tar Heel Certificate Program for Research Administrators
The Office of Sponsored Research is pleased to announce the first offering of a professional development curriculum in research administration. The Tar Heel Certificate Program is a series of workshops for administrative and other staff members who support the University’s sponsored research. The workshops are designed to help individuals build competencies and increase knowledge in areas related to sponsored research with the overall goal of increasing efficiency and effectiveness of all those involved in daily research administration activities.
The deadline for application is Friday, August 20, 2004. Eligibility, application, and other information is available at the following web site: http://osr.unc.edu/training/TarHeelCertificateProgram.php.

Funding Tips
Customized Finding Funding Workshops for Groups
One of the GrantSource Library’s most useful services for faculty and staff is our customized group workshop on how to identify potential funding sources for research, training, programs, and other scholarly endeavors. As you begin planning your professional development activities, faculty retreats, or staff meetings for the coming academic year, we invite you to schedule a Library workshop in your department. We will work with you to plan a session relevant to your faculty’s funding needs and research interests.
In each session, the GrantSource Librarian demonstrates some of the online resources that faculty and staff can use to identify funding opportunities in their discipline. Participants also learn how to set up a time-saving Community of Science funding alert, conduct a personalized electronic search for targeted grant information, and find Carolina internal funding sources. Other topics include tips for conducting a funding search and an overview of resources available through the GrantSource Library.
Please contact us at gs@unc.edu or 919-962-3463 to discuss your needs and to schedule a workshop for your research team, department, center, or institute.
For a list of already scheduled workshops, click here.
Foundation Funding for the Humanities
Between 1992 and 2002 funding for the humanities increased by more than 150 percent. But, according to a report released by The Foundation Center, giving for the humanities still significantly trails the giving provided for other disciplines.
The June 2004 report released by The Foundation Center, in cooperation with The American Academy of Arts & Sciences, reveals that funding for the humanities increased two-and-a-half times from $134.1 million in 1992 to $335 million in 2002, as the number of grants offered for the humanities doubled from 1,649 to 3,296 during the same period.
The increase in funding for the humanities can largely be attributed to the growing number of foundations providing support for the humanities. Between 1992 and 2002 the number of foundations giving grants for the humanities jumped from 498 to 683.
But only a handful of the foundations consistently funded the humanities, and the foundations appear to have a narrow interest, the report says. For example, the majority of the support (49 percent of the grant dollars and 54 percent of the grants) was allocated to two humanities-related subfields—historical and museum activities. Plus, giving for the humanities accounted for 2.1 percent of the overall giving in 2002—a drop from 2.5 percent in 1992, the report says.
New Funding Opportunities Database in the GrantSource Library
The Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS) funding database is now available on a three-month trial basis through the GrantSource Library’s web site. Carolina campus-based researchers, research administrators, and graduate students can search this database of more than 8,000 active federal and private funding opportunities in medicine, sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Users can search IRIS by agency, deadline date, keywords, and other criteria. Most IRIS records contain live links to sponsor Web sites, electronic forms, or Electronic Research Administration (ERA) portals, so getting started on finding funding is only a mouse-click away.
An especially useful tool is the IRIS alert service which allows you to create and save your own IRIS search profile. It will automatically run at specified intervals (daily, weekly, monthly) and alert you to upcoming funding opportunities in your areas of interest. This is a true “set it and forget it” funding alert tool. To learn how to start receiving alerts, click here.
Other features of IRIS include:
- lists of upcoming deadlines (July-November 2004) in more than 20 broad subject areas for researchers at all levels, including graduate students; and
- links to research agencies in other countries
The GrantSource Library invites you to try out the new IRIS funding database, alert service, and other useful features. Please note that this database is available on campus only until September 30. We will evaluate the feasibility of a long-term subscription at that time.
Let us know if you have any questions about how to use IRIS. We also welcome your feedback as we evaluate this new service. Contact us at gs@unc.edu or 919-962-3463.

New Eligibility Criteria for American Cancer Society Extramural Grants
The criteria for eligibility requirements for the Extramural Research Grant Program of the American Cancer Society (ACS) have changed as the society refines the focus of the program for beginning investigators. Such changes, which will be phased in beginning with the next submission deadline of October 15, 2004 and do not apply for Targeted Research Scholar Grants, include:
- Individuals must not have held an independent position for more than six years at the time the application is submitted. (The first year of eligibility is considered to begin at the end of the sixth year of postdoctoral appointments.)
- Current Research Scholar Grants will be phased out for the immediate future except for individuals whose initial applications for a new or renewal award was submitted on or before April 1, 2004, or for individuals who are revising applications for resubmissions, which will be accepted for the October 15, 2004 and April 1, 2005 deadlines.
- No award will exceed $200,000 (direct cost) per year, and a detailed explanation of the need for additional funds in excess of $150,000 for basic or pre-clinical research must be submitted with the application.
- Applications will not be accepted from individuals whose current research support as a principal investigator includes more than one R01-type grant that has been awarded for at least three years and exceeds $100,000.
Additionally, applications for the research and clinical research professorships will not be accepted until further notice, except in response to RFAs; renewal applications are not affected. Research opportunity grants also have been suspended until further notice. READ MORE
