The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development administers two internal funding programs. (Note: the GrantSource Library maintains information on other sources of funding opportunities.) The OVC internal grants programs are:
Forms are available in several formats through the links below.
The University Research Council (URC) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill administers a Small Grant program for faculty and professional librarians at UNC-CH. Two types of grants are available:
The maximum URC award is $5,000. (This increases the previous maximum of $4,000.) A faculty member may submit only one URC proposal each semester — either research or publication.
Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time members of the UNC-CH faculty in the tenure, tenure-track, or research professorial or clinical ranks, or be professional librarians in the analogous librarian ranks. Adjunct professors are not eligible for URC grants, nor are lecturers, instructors, or others of non-professioral rank. Preference is given to less senior applicants only for the purpose of breaking ties.
Deadlines: Proposals are reviewed twice a year, in fall and spring. Faculty members are sent an announcement in advance of each deadline. The deadline for Fall 2009 is Monday, October 12, 2009.
Forms: URC application forms are available in Adobe PDF and MSWord formats. There are separate forms for research and publications grants:
Please read the directions carefully. Please include only the paperwork requested. Times New Roman 10-point is the standard font. Failure to follow instructions may cause your application to be rejected.
Inquiries may be directed to Jennifer Pruitt, URC Coordinator, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, CB 4100, 301 Bynum Hall. Telephone: 962-7757. Fax: 962-6769.
Please note: Grants are available for faculty and librarians at UNC-Chapel Hill only.

All full time members of the research faculty at UNC-CH are eligible to apply for support as well as other full time staff routinely engaged as principal investigators on scholarly or scientific research, such as librarians or curators. This program does not support travel to scholarly or scientific meetings and priority will be given to those who have not received support during the past twelve months. Small grants may be made to cover supplementary expenses involved in adding sponsor visits to travel already scheduled for other purposes.
Funds can only be disbursed upon receipt of documentation of travel costs using a signed Travel Authorization and appropriate receipts. Your department chair must also sign the application for travel support. The maximum travel grant is $400.
We require only one copy of the application form and requests may be submitted at any time. This program does not fund travel retroactively; your application must be received by the Vice Chancellor's office before you take your trip. Decisions to fund travel will normally be made within a week of the receipt of your application. If you have questions about this program or need additional information, please contact Jennifer Pruitt, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, 962-7757.
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development has developed funding for establishing new research efforts in program areas served by Kenan Institute Asia (K.I.Asia). K.I.Asia was formed as a collaboration between the Thailand government, USAID and the Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1996. The mission of K.I.Asia is to build sustainable competitiveness in Thailand and the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The Institute tries to accomplish this mission by developing multi-sector partnerships based on true development needs and mutual benefit between Asia and the United States through the cooperation of universities, government agencies and the private sector.
The work of K.I.Asia is focused in eight program areas: 1) economic environment and competitiveness; 2) corporate citizenship; 3) small and medium-size entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship; 4) youth and education; 5) community strengthening and microfinance; 6) environment; 7) public health and 8) tsunami recovery. More details about these programs can be found at the K.I.Asia web site.
Paul Wedel, the executive director of K.I.Asia, has compiled a list of research areas related to K.I.Asia.
Faculty (tenure and research track) from all units at UNC-Chapel Hill are eligible to apply for funding. Funding will be provided for travel expenses related to developing research contacts/partnerships in the Greater Mekong region in collaboration with K.I.Asia or entities identified by K.I.Asia. Examples of acceptable expenditures include air travel costs and living expenses while in Asia. Priority will be given to new research projects in this region; however, continuation or expansion of exceptionally meritorious projects will be considered. Requests up to $5,000 per application should be submitted. It is possible to request $5000-$10,000, but this funding level will be unusual and will require very strong justification. It is strongly recommended that applicants contact Paul Wedel, Executive Director of K.I.Asia and/or Jack Kasarda, Director of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, prior to submission of an application.
A complete application should consist of up to five pages double-spaced that describe:
Awardees must submit a written report of results, outcomes and benefits produced by the funding no later than thirty (30) days following their return to the Carolina campus.
Applications should be submitted no later than November 1, 2007 by email to: Tony Waldrop with CC to Jo Ann Gustafson. Questions about this funding program can be directed to Tony Waldrop (962-1319).
