Synopsis
The program's goal is to promote the development of outstanding scientists pursuing careers in cancer research by supporting the establishment of their independent laboratories.
Guidelines
- The university as a whole may nominate two institutional candidates: one basic scientist and one physician-scientist.
- Candidates must be assistant professors in the first three years of their initial faculty appointments.
- Physician-scientist candidates must hold appointments in clinical departments.
- The institution and department must guarantee a commitment to the candidate and the development of their laboratory and career, and must guarantee that 80% of the applicant's time over the term of the award will be devoted to research activity.
- Although funds from research grants may supplement the award, no other award expressly intended for career development may be held concurrently with a Damon Runyon Scholar Award. - Former Damon Runyon Fellows who are eligible for this award may also apply independent of the institutional nomination process.
Evaluation Criteria
Promise, as evidenced by scientific accomplishments, of future contributions that will lead to understanding the causes and mechanisms of cancer and to developing more effective cancer therapies and preventions.
Awards
- $300,000 ($100,000/year for 3 years)
- 5 Scholar Awards will be given in this award cycle.
- Funds may be used for the awardee's salary, technical support, and/or technical equipment or supplies in support of research.
- Indirect costs are not allowed.
