Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship and a commitment to education that signals the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program is judged primarily on individual research attainment and promise, but evidence of excellence in teaching is also expected.

Nominees must be tenure-track or tenured professors in the chemical sciences and are normally expected to be within the first 5 years of their academic careers.
