Interdisciplinary / Multidisciplinary Initiatives

One of our goals is to enable greater collaboration among researchers from different disciplines (see examples here). Both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research explore problems by uniting disciplines, but interdisciplinary initiatives create new tools and new fields of research. To encourage and support interdisciplinary partnerships, ORD provides:

A Department of Energy Solar Energy Research Center (UNC-EFRC): Solar Fuels and the Next Generation Photovoltaic to mobilize the University's resources towards creating a sustainable energy future.

The Center for Natural Hazards, Emergency Management and Coastal Resilience, funded for $15 million by the Department of Homeland Security. Through interdisciplinary research, the Center bridges coastal hazard sciences, the built environment and psychosocial responses. As the sole resource center and a National Center of Excellence, the UNC Chapel Hill Center connects more than 30 institutions.

The Carolina Women's Center Conference on Sex Trafficking: Prevention and Intervention in North Carolina and Worldwide to bring together communities, students and Carolina scholars to address the crisis of trafficking of women and children.

A Translational Research Project Program Grant: "Neurobehavioral and Biological Consequences of Cocaine Use in Mother/Infant Dyads" awarded to Dr Joey Johns for $12 million by the National Institute of Health.

A Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine Training Grant was awarded to Dr Jan Busby-Whitehead from the John A Hartford Foundation. With this award, the UNC Center on Aging and Health joins a prestigious network of Centers of Excellence and receives $750,000 funding to support the training of junior faculty members as they prepare for careers in aging research and teaching.
