Limited-Submission Awards and Grants - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a limited submission award?

A limited submission award is given to an individual as an acknowledgment of their academic or professional achievement. Awards are nominated by a department chair, dean or program head. These awards frequently target junior faculty who have demonstrated significant contributions early in their careers. ORD acts as a liaison between the award-granting agency and UNC. See examples of awards ORD coordinates.

2. What is a limited submission grant?

A limited submission grant is given to an individual or a team to fund a particular project or body of work. Agencies accept a limited number of proposals from each institution and the University must determine which proposals are submitted. Applications are submitted to the ORD, which coordinates the University's formal submission to the grant agency. Grant agencies often provide substantive feedback on strategies to improve proposals for resubmission. See examples of limited submission grants.

3. Do I need to be nominated for a limited submission award ?

Yes. Your current department chair, program head or dean must nominate you to the ORD.

4. Do I need to be nominated for limited submission grant?

No. An individual or research team self-nominates to the ORD for a limited submission grant. The applicant(s) must submit a pre-proposal to the ORD.

5. How does the ORD determine which proposals to submit for a limited submission grant or award?

Should the ORD receive more applications than an agency permits for grants or awards, ORD facilitates an internal review of proposals, which mirrors the NIH Study Section Panels review process. Applicants submit names of three faculty members who can speak knowledgeably about the area of proposed research. From among this list, ORD chooses a faculty member to observe the internal review process for the proposal and provide feedback directly to the applicant(s).

6. Who can I ask if I have additional questions?

Please Regina Bartolone, Associate Director, ORD at regina_bartolone@unc.edu, or 962-7504
