Internal Funding Database provides valuable research resource

March 2005

Looking for money so you can present at that biomedical engineering conference in Moscow? To get that exhibit of your still-life photos up and running? Or, to study pathogenesis of infectious diseases?

Whatever your financial needs — whether you're an undergraduate or graduate student, a doctoral candidate or postdoctoral scholar, or beginning assistant professor or tenured-professor — there's bound to be some internal funding opportunities available to support your research, creative and teaching activities.

To find out what's available, check out the Carolina Internal Funding Database at cfx.research.unc.edu/funding/index.cfm.

This database allows faculty, staff and students to search for opportunities that are funded by departments, offices and institutes on campus. The database also contains information about prizes, nominations and other limited awards funded by external sponsors but administered by the University or that require an internal application process.

You can search through the several hundred opportunities currently listed by deadline date, keyword, type of funding, source of funding or applicant type. Funding opportunities available range from $1 to $1,000,000 and support research projects, public service activities, professional development, traveling and publishing ventures and tuition assistance.

The GrantSource Library, which helps faculty, staff and graduate students find financial support, maintains the database.

"I hope that the database will become the central location where faculty, staff and students can go to find all the university-administered opportunities that are available," said Susan Gramling, GrantSource Librarian and Information Development Coordinator.

To make this database a one-stop tool, the library relies on administrators on campus to inform the library of the funding opportunities sponsored by their department, office or institute. Administrators may add and update information directly to the database or send their updates to the library staff, who will add the information.

The staff updates the database periodically, but they will be doing a major update this summer.

"If administrators and faculty members know of something that's available," Gramling said, "I encourage them to notify us and to publicize these opportunities on the Carolina Internal Funding Database."

To get administrative access to add and edit your unit's funding opportunities directly in the database, or for additional information such as step-by-step instructions for searching the database, call the GrantSource Library at 962-3463 or e-mail gs@unc.edu. Or, you can drop by the library, which is located in 307 Bynum Hall and open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Technology transfer update

The Office of Technology Development helps Carolina faculty, students, and staff develop and commercialize patentable inventions resulting from their research. In April, the University executed three license agreements and had three U.S. patents issued.

A patent is a legal document granting inventors the exclusive right to prevent others from making, using or selling an invention for a number of years. A license agreement is a written contract granting permission for a person or company to use an invention under certain terms. For more information about OTD, visit OTD online.
