FYI Research:
Fair to showcase services for researchers

Need to find funding for your research? Don't know whom to call to promote your research results, or how to fill out an internal processing form? On Nov. 21, you can meet the people who can help you at the Research Fair.

From 1 to 3 p.m., representatives of offices that support research will display posters about their services in the Wilson Library Pleasants Family Assembly Room. Faculty, staff or students can come by to ask questions, give suggestions about ways to improve services or just chat. To learn about funding or promoting your research, talk to people from the Office of Information and Communications. To learn about the internal processing form and more, visit with representatives of the Office of Sponsored Research.

New faculty are a target audience for the fair, but graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and staff who work with researchers will also find useful information and meet contacts.

"We really invite them to come talk with us," said Jacqueline Resnick, director of the Office of Research Development and co-organizer of the fair.

The Research Fair will put a human face on the people who support research at Carolina, said Robert Lowman, associate vice chancellor for research and co-organizer of the fair. Over the last 12 years, research funding at Carolina has tripled, and the number of people working on that research effort has also grown.

"The whole research infrastructure has gotten to be a much bigger endeavor, and we have to find ways to make it more personal and more accessible for our faculty, staff and students," Lowman said.

Though sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, the fair will include representatives from more than 20 offices, including Medical Illustration and Photography, which can help researchers prepare illustrations and figures to use in publications; the Office of University Counsel, which can provide legal advice to researchers; and the Division of Environmental Health and Safety, which ensures lab safety.

"To the best of our knowledge, there has never been one event that showcased all of the offices on campus that are involved in supporting students and faculty in research," Lowman said.
