Faculty mentors play a critical role in the training of postdoctoral scholars, providing opportunities for postdocs to develop their knowlege and research skills. Similarly, departmental staff such as human resource facilatators or budget managers are important resources for new postdoctoral scholars,making sure postdocs complete necessary paperwork, sign up for health coverage, or obtain access to other servcies on campus.

OPA also sponsors events for faculty mentors and HR Facilitators who work with postdocs, including the School of Medicine’s Quarterly HR Training and New PI Training (hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence). Messages are sent out on the listserv to provide information about events pertaining to postdoc career development, which may include seminars, workshops, conferences, internships, awards, and other opportunities. The listserv also informs postdocs of official university business, UNC postdoctoral policies, upcoming social events, and campus resources for postdocs. This listserv is only available to current postdoctoral scholars who are affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Changes to Postdoc Policies
A revised version of UNC’s Postdoctoral Policies will go into effect on July 1, 2013. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs has worked closely with the Advisory Committee on Postdoctoral Scholars, the Office of University Counsel, the Equal Opportunity Office, and the Office of Human Resources to improve the clarity and cohesiveness of the UNC Postdoctoral Policies. The Vice Chancellor for Research reviewed the revised policy with the Provost and Deans’ Council earlier this spring and provided approval.
Changes to Postdoc Health Insurance Plan
Effective July 1, 2013, new rates for postdoctoral scholars and their dependents have a rate increase while continuing to provide the highest quality coverage. Also effective on July 1 will be a change in the plan coverage where coverage begins the first day of the month following the month of the Postdoc’s appointment effective date.
New Postdoc Job Posting Site

Increase in Postdoc Minimum Stipend
Effective July 1, 2012, the minimum stipend for a Postdoctoral Scholar shall be no less than $37,088. It is encouraged to provide additional stipend for postdoctoral scholars based upon their performance.
