Euthanasia of Animals in Animal Housing Areas

Revised August 28, 2003

The federal regulatory agency Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) has required UNC-Chapel Hill to comply with recommendations in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Panel on Euthanasia regarding euthanasia of animals. The Guide and AVMA Panel recommendation that "...other animals should not be present when euthanasia is performed" precludes euthanasia of any individual or group of animals in animal rooms unless written scientific justification has been submitted to and accepted by the IACUC.

No euthanasia is permitted in the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine facility animals housing rooms. If you wish to submit a request for exception to this policy, please complete and submit an exception request on ACAP. For exceptions on pre-ACAP applications, contact OACU at 6-5569. On ACAP, exception requests must be part of an amendment and must include scientific justification supporting the necessity of euthanasia in an animal room. The IACUC will review your exception request at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
