Postoperative Analgesia

Postoperative analgesia is required for all survival surgeries. Selection of appropriate analgesic agents should be based on the type of surgical procedure. Postoperative analgesia should be provided for a period of 24-48 hours depending on the nature of the surgery. If a surgical procedure is deemed to require analgesics in humans, animals receiving a similar procedure should be administered analgesics as well. Invasive procedures may require narcotic analgesia such as Buprenorphine (Buprenex), morphine, or Fentanyl patches. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, carprofen, and ketorolac are suitable for less invasive procedures.

For specific agents, dosages, and routes, please contact the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) veterinary staff at 6-3111.
