Laboratory Coordinator Training and Certification

Introduction

In order to fulfill animal handler training requirements mandated by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), each principal investigator must identify a laboratory coordinator to coordinate animal training activities within the lab. The coordinator may be the principle investigator or some other qualified member of the research team. The laboratory coordinator must be trained and certified by the IACUC or Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) to perform basic techniques his/her lab is approved to perform.

The IACUC realizes this certification process will take months. Please be patient as we make every effort to meet these federal training requirements.

All Animal Users: Laboratory Coordinators Lectures

The IACUC is conducting mandatory meetings to inform laboratory coordinators of their responsibilities. Laboratory coordinators will also be required to attend species specific, hands-on wet labs. Given the number of laboratories and the limited class size, it will take months to complete the certification of all laboratory coordinators. Please appoint a laboratory coordinator and have them enroll in the lecture component of training by email at iacuc@med.unc.edu. They should include the investigator's name, contact number and address. If you have questions, please contact the IACUC office at 966-5569.

Rat and Mouse Users: Laboratory Coordinator Wet Labs

Please have your coordinator register for the rodent wet labs by visiting the IACUC website at http://research.unc.edu/iacuc/. The wet lab space is limited. Enrollment will be done on a first come first serve basis. Only those that are registered will be allowed to attend.

A waiting list will be maintained for each wet lab.

Rodent Survival Surgery Training

Investigators whose approved applications describe rodent survival surgery must have a Laboratory Coordinator register for the IACUC Aseptic Surgical Technique Class and attend this training course. Individuals can register by visiting the IACUC web site training section at http://research.unc.edu/iacuc/.

Other Mammalian Species: Laboratory Coordinator Training (dogs, cats, pigs, guinea-pigs, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, non-human primates)

The DLAM Veterinary Technical Services will perform training for use of USDA covered species (indicated above). Please contact DLAM at 966-3111 to arrange training.

Other Species (birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish)

Most of these species are housed in the investigators' laboratories and are maintained by the investigator personnel. The IACUC will hold mandatory training for investigators maintaining a satellite housing facility on April 7, 8, and 9. The IACUC will send individualized notice to each of those investigators.

Any investigators with species not included in this listing, or other investigators not maintaining a satellite facility but using one of these other species, should contact the IACUC Office at 966-5569.
