As a first step, research administrators should direct Principal Investigators new to UNC or new to animal research to contact the Office of Animal Care and Use.  This alerts the OACU to the new PI and initiates the relationship between the PI and the IACUC.  The OACU will provide the PI with an informational packet that includes the information below.   Please click the link at the top of this page to access a printable checklist.

Electronic Application to Use Live Vertebrate Animals (ACAP) – You will need an active ONYEN and password to log in.

IACUC Meeting Dates and Application Submission Guidelines:

IACUC Meeting Dates and Submission Guidelines – Applications must be submitted to the OACU by the 15th of the month in order to be reviewed at the upcoming IACUC meeting.

Required Online Forms:

Once your PID and ONYEN are set-up (See the “UNC Information” section on this page), access the online Animal Research Registration system and complete the following items:

    • Research Profile
      • Must be completed first as this establishes access to the online training materials
      • Must be completed once and then updated only as needed (i.e. lab location change, PI change, addition of animal handling responsibilities)
    • Lab Worker Form
      • Must be completed in order to access the Animal Handler form
      • Must be completed once and then updated as needed to reflect any relevant changes
      • Please contact EHS if you require assistance completing this form
    • Animal Handler Form
      • Also called the University Employee Occupational Health Clinic (UEOHC) Research Animal Handlers and Animal Caretakers Medical History Form
      • Required for all individuals who handle or are exposed to animals
      • Must be completed prior to attending hands-on animal technique classes
      • The UEOHC staff reviews this form and may schedule further medical screening depending on your animal contact and level of risk
      • This form must be updated annually
      • See Annual Review of the Animal Handler Form for more information
    • Online IACUC Orientation
      • Required for all individuals listed on the Animal Care Application
      • Must be completed only once, prior to application approval
    • Online DCM Orientation
      • Required for all PI’s, Co-PI’s, individuals handling animals, and those entering the DCM facilities
      • Must be completed prior to application approval and updated every 3 years

Required Hands-on Classes and Lectures:

Personnel must complete hands-on training prior to working with animals.
