"Look for potential funders with..."
  • Look for potential funders with a good fit
  • Identify funders’ goals or needs
  • Talk to the program officer
  • Broaden your search
  • Approach your search from different perspectives
8
Things to Consider
Before Searching
  • Keywords that apply to research interests
    • Specific and broad disciplinary terms
  • Categories that apply to PI
    • Faculty/junior faculty/postdoc, citizenship, minority, woman, disabled
  • Type of award sought
    • Research, program support, training grant, fellowship, collaboration, travel
9
Where to Start Your Search
  • Visit our website and search on your own
    http://research.unc.edu/grantsource/
  • Use Finding Funding 101 for tips on organizing your search
  • E-mail or call if you have questions
  • Visit the GrantSource Library for
in-person help and instruction in using online and library resources
  • Schedule a consultation
10

11
"Main search (recommended)"
  • Main search (recommended)
    • recommended fields = keywords, requirements, citizenship or residency, activity location, funding type
    • click “Add Keywords” to view keyword subject tree
    • use “Search” feature to find keywords you want
    • uncheck “Explode” if you use broad keywords
12
"Weekly email with new or..."
  • Weekly email with new or updated opportunities
  • For best results, do three steps:
    • First, register for COS expertise profile (graduate profiles are unpublished)
    • Second, go to “Manage Your Profile” and click on “Current Positions” to “Edit Your Current Position” with title, school, department
    • Third, click “Add a Search” to do a funding search and then “Save Search”
13
Discussion
  • What techniques have you used successfully to disseminate funding opportunities to your PIs?
  • What didn’t work as well?
  • What are your challenges?

14
InfoEd SPIN
Funding Opportunities Database
  • Similar to COS
  • Main differences:
    • additional opportunities
    • different keywords and search terms
    • different interface (keywords alphabetized)
  • Be certain to use “Search” and not “Enter”

15
InfoEd SMARTS/GENIUS
  • GENIUS is InfoEd’s expertise profile
    • required to receive SMARTS
    • these are NOT published
    • faculty and staff only, not grad students
  • SMARTS is InfoEd’s funding alert service
    • only one alert, but can have unlimited keywords
    • alerts are sporadic (when opportunity announced)
16
Carolina Internal Funding Database
  • Information on funding provided by or administered by UNC-Chapel Hill offices
  • Searchable by only one field at a time
    • Search by “faculty”, “postdoctoral scholar”, etc
  • Smaller database
  • Contribute any of your unit’s opportunities that are soliciting applications to gs@unc.edu

17
Foundation Directory Online
  • Private foundations and corporate grantmakers in the US
