Proposal Writing Help
This is a partial list of offices at UNC-Chapel Hill that provide assistance
to faculty, staff, and graduate students related to proposals for grants, fellowships
and other awards. If you would like to add an office to this list, please email

Assistance For All Departments
- GrantSource Library
- The library has reference books and online resources, including guidelines and tutorials, on proposal writing..
- Office of Sponsored
Research
- Processes proposals for extramural funding and helps investigators
submitting proposals consistent with University rules, government regulations,
and sound management practices. OSR is responsible for final acceptance
of contracts from government, for-profit and non-profit sponsors, and
the negotation of awards.
- Office of Research
Development
- Works with faculty and staff to develop collaborative proposals
across campus and manages the university's process for limited awards
and grants.
- Writing Center
- Reviews proposals or applications and assists with the writing process.
Assistance For Specific Departments
- Carolina Population Center
- Facilitates the research and related activities of faculty fellows,
postdoctoral scholars, and predoctoral trainees.
- Collaborative Studies
Coordinating Center
- Provides a broad range of support with grants proposal preparation
and contracts and grants management. Also provides statistical, data
management, quality assurance, and study management services. The organization
includes professional personnel from biostatistics, epidemiology, computer
science/data management, medicine, pharmacy, and nutrition.
- The Graduate
School
- Offers professional development courses on proposal writing and presentation
skills, as well as other academic career development topics for graduate
students.
- The
Health Science Library
- Provides information on grant preparation, resource guides, information
management tools, search assistance and animal testing for researchers
in the health sciences.
- Injury Prevention Research
Center
- Provides technical and administrative assistance to researchers developing
injury grant proposals. Also offers technical and administrative support
for student projects and papers, matching student interests with faculty
research projects, and assisting in securing fellowship support.
- Odum
Institute for Research in Social Science
- Offers assistance with the development and submission of research proposals
and the administration of grants for social science faculty and graduate
student researchers. Also offers short courses in locating sources of
funding.
- Office of Research,
School of Public Health
- Helps faculty members develop grant proposals and informs them of grant
and fellowship opportunities. Also assists junior-level faculty members
succeed in the grant proposal submission process with workshops and seminars,
and more. Offers a proposal editing service for faculty, staff and students - helping with proofreading, formatting, and scientific editing (persuasiveness of argument, matching aims to methods, etc).
- Office
of Research, School of Medicine
- Activities include help with specific research grant applications and
coordination of grant application submission.
- Research
Support Center, School of Nursing
- Provides research consultation and grant development and preparation
to those in pre- or post-funding stages who do not have access to external
support for such services.
