Welcome

The Office of Federal Affairs is the lead representative of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill charged with coordinating and expanding the university's relationships with federal funding agencies, with strengthening the university's contributions to national advisory panels and Congress and representatives of policy boards, and with supporting the university's federal initiatives.

The Office of Federal Affairs assists faculty and campus leaders to identify opportunities and to secure federal research support; acts as liaison between the leadership of the university and the North Carolina Congressional delegation; and strengthens the university's visibility and contributions to national policy by representing the institution in interaction with federal agency personnel, colleagues from peer institutions, and coalitions of university advocates.

Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, accounting for nearly half of all deaths and health care expenditures in our country. The problem of heart disease is magnified in minority populations.

In 2005, the federal affairs team worked with faculty at both UNC Chapel Hill's and East Carolina Universities medical schools to secure funding for the Program in Racial Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease. Physician-scientists at the two UNC institutions will develop state-of-the-art computer and database platforms, computer applications, and much needed networks of physicians, scientists, and patient populations, together enabling investigators to extract information about both the causes of illness and the effectiveness of various interventions.
